Today we left busy London to go driving through the beautiful English countryside .
Our first stop was at the famous Stonehenge. These stone circles were built more than 5000 years ago, even before the Celts And Druids. It is believed these people used the stones possibly for sacrifices and worship, although no one knows this for sure. It was also suggested that people used the stones as a measure of the seasons, as a way to measure the summer solstice. it is also a mystery how the lintel stones were placed on top of the vertical supporting pillars. You can see on one of the vertical stones, the mortise and tenon style joint used, third from left below.
It was also interesting to see some agriculture. We saw some pig farms, sweet corn fields, and bales of hay. There were also lots of crops which had been harvested, including linseed, and canola.
From Stonehenge we went to beautiful Bath. This city consists of largely Georgian architecture. All of the stone used to build the houses was local stone. The Romans also had a large influence on the city, where they created the well known Roman Baths. Below is a stunning old abbey.
This is The Circus, where the houses are built around a circular park in the centre.
These are gardens beside the River Avon
